What Type of Recorder Should We Use?

There are a variety of types available, but the ones most commonly used in schools, and covered by the material on this site, are the descant (also known as the soprano) and the treble (also known as the alto).

Which One is Most Suitable?

There is no definitive answer to this, but the points to consider are:

The descant is shorter, so easier for small hands. It uses a similar fingering to the flute, making it a good stepping stone to that instrument. It is higher pitched than the treble.

The treble has the lower, more mellow sound, and is more popular with older, more advanced students. The fingering makes it a good stepping stone to the clarinet. However, it does require slightly larger hands and is more suited to children aged 8 and above.

What Do they Cost?

A reasonable plastic recorder can be bought for less than £20; wooden ones cost a little more. Yamaha and Aulos are recommended brands.
